Community Outreach

In addition to concerts and performances, Sukay also conducts Master Classes, Lecture-Demonstrations, residencies and workshops for a broad range of educational institutions. The music of  a particular culture can be strange or nonplusing to another culture. This may help to explain why musical instruments from different parts of the world may be similar in appearance but produce music that sounds very different. The musicians of SUKAY will perform music using several unique instruments  and drums dating back to the Incan empire. These and other ancient musical instruments from the Andes region of South America will both fascinate and inspire your students’ imagination. Sukay will not only perform the music of the Andes, but they will sing the songs, describe the land, and share the cultures of the people who produce this music.

GOALS

  • To explore the cultures of the Andes Mountain region of South America
  • To develop the students’ knowledge and appreciation of indigenous
  • South American music

OBJECTIVES

  • Students will become aware of the music of the inhabitants of the
  • Andes Mountain region of South America

  • Students will explore the role that environment plays in the creation of musical instruments
  • Students will learn to fashion their own indigenous wind, percussion and string instruments

A study program is available to each school with pre and post-visit activities.

SOME SELECTED COMMENTS...

"Their performance was absolutely wonderful. The children were spellbound, delighted, amazed, and fascinated. It was truly a very educational and positive experience." --Linda Manning, Music Teacher, Fillmore Elementary School, Davenport, Iowa

"The three artists gave an energetic performance that introduced students to instruments and music of a different culture. Their sense of timing, stage decorum, and skills in interacting with children led to both entertaining and valuable learning experiences." --David Fairweather, Principal, Riverdale Elementary School, Pleasant Valley, Iowa

"Your program at our school today was wonderful! My first graders are still talking about it!" --Kathy Sassaman, Teacher, Riverside Elementary School, REading, Pennsylvania

"They were ‘awesome,’ as some of the students said. If you could seethe faces of our students, you would have known they were completely engrossed in the music and the performers." --Sister Rita Green,Principal, Sacred Heart School, Maquoketa, Iowa
