My first encounter with Andean music was via Paul Simon’s "El Condor Pasa," and I didn’t like it one bit. In more recent years, I’ve heard more of this music—the real think—and it has grown on me. Sukay have Americanized their ideas a little, so it’s rather like the Andes go spaghetti western in places, but it works. The sound can both lull and groove—quite a feat for a few acoustic instruments and a voice. And what Sukay do with the Pan pipes would make Zamfir green with envy. It’s a slightly acquired taste, but so was Thai food at one time --exotic and unusual;and now we're all eating it.
