College Football 2003 in Pictures

In case I somehow haven't made it clear by now, college football season is my favorite time of year. During the 2003 season I attended a total of eleven football games: six home games for the University of Houston at Robertson Stadium, one UH away game at Lafayette, two Rice games at Rice Stadium and two North Texas games at Fouts Field in Denton. Here are some sights of the season.

From left to right: Lorena the Wicked Sister-in-Law, Lori, Ronnie Teer, Joe "SaltwaterCoog" Gonzalez and David Taylor celebrate the beginning of another year of UH football and the attendant tailgating activities. Arrive early in the Robertson Stadium parking lot if you want a good tailgating space.

The Bada Bing cookers prepare to feed the hungry masses. That's Joe "JoeCoog" Cazarez in the middle. The Bada Bing Cookers were the first of six cooking teams to host the Coogfans.com tailgate. The best team is awarded the Coogfans Tailgate League championship at the end of the season.

Members of my tailgating crew eat and talk before the game begins. From left: Lori, Steve Casburn, Lorena the Wicked Sister-in-Law, Larry Williams, Debbie Williams, Dan Wells, Hannah Williams, my mom and Janet Widger.

The Coogs are ready to kick off to the Rice Owls and begin another season. Doesn't it look beautfiul?!

Rice's defenders quickly get to the ball carrier. However, plays like this were few and far between for the Rice defense. The new-look Cougar offense was able to move the ball at will against the Owls, and Houston's true freshman quarterback, Kevin Kolb, looked like anything but a rookie as he systematically picked apart Rice's defense.

The Rice MOB performs at halftime. I remember the good ol' days of the Southwest Conference when the MOB would actually be funny. Unfortunately, those days are over and the MOB just isn't that funny anymore.

The Spirit of Houston performs at halftime. The band has grown considerably in size since David Bertman became Band Director a few years ago.

The Bayou Bucket stays on this side of Main Street ! My tailgating crew celebrates a 48-14 victory over the Owls. You'd be surprised at how much beer a group of UH School of Life Sciences professors can consume.
