Submissions

The Powhatan Review is a bi-annual journal publishing work by both new and established authors, poets, and visual artists.  We have no preference in subject matter (no themes) and are looking for high quality, bold approaches to writing and art and the "truth" in details of real lives and hard won experience.

The Powhatan Review is a non-academic venue that challenges all artists to submit.  All copyrights are held by author or artist.

Guidelines For Submission

I accept submissions by email provided they are a .doc attachment, however if you have taken the time to send your submissions via mail those have first priority.  I will normally use email submissions as a last resort to fill in holes for the upcoming issue.

Ensure that all submissions contain a cover letter with a bio.  If you are unpublished tell me something about yourself - goals, classes, readings etc.  Include SASE only if you desire submissions returned.  Writers will be notified via email if submissions are used.  Make sure that there is a current email address with each submission.  If you don't have an email address use one for a friend or relative, this way I'll be able to contact you quickly as to whether your submission will be published or not.

Stories/Essays - Fiction, Non-Fiction

  • Include the word count on the first page.  2,000 word maximum.  Prefer 1000-1500 words.
  • Clear, concise, typo-free.  Self-diagnosis and/or clinical/academic writing is not recommended, except where these contribute to memoir or storyline.

Verse/Poetry

  • Open to all poets writing in English.  Original work.  Any form or style, short pieces prefered.
  • Poets responsibility to secure the right to publish previously published work.

Art and Photography

  • All types, clear B+W/Color copies, no slides
  • Materials will not be returned unless specified.  Email submissions accepted if sent by attachment.

Rather than raise the price of The Powhatan Review to $4.00 to cover the rising cost of printing I will only be sending one copy to each contributor instead of the usual two.  If a contributor wishes to order extra copies they can contact me via email and I will give them a better price.

As always, I'm extremely grateful for the writers, poets, artists and photographers who submit to The Powhatan Review.  Without you the magazine would cease to exist.
