Note: because of the lack of records after December, the late fall extreme date was taken from the latest record in that month, as these are unlikely to represent wintering birds.
21. Black-crowned Night-Heron--Permanent Resident (common SP, SU, and F; uncommon W). Largest number: summer 1984 (700, count from aerial photo) Bordeaux Heronry (BBP). Note: has nested continuously for many years at the Bordeaux Heronry: and has nested sporadically on islands in Old Hickory L. and in Mill Creek.

Notes: this species was assigned provisional status because these birds may represent escapes from captivity; TWRA has released birds in the Area in the past, which may account for these records; possibly these birds represent strays from the native population on the Cumberland Plateau.
