ELLIOTT 7 CLASS

The E7s have had some impressive results over the last 18 months. In Australia they have won practically every State title and every high profile event that they are eligible for.

Congratulations to Kerli Corlett and crew of Sailing Scene for winning the Australia Trailer Yacht National Titles. It was great to see such a good turn out of boats at Hamilton Island Raceweek. Congratulations to Traks Gordon and crew of Fear This for being placed 2nd in the Sports trailable division out of a fleet of very hot Elliott7s and 770s.

Elliott 7 Harken National Titles Held at Mornington Yacht Club. Attended by sailors from; Brisbane, Coffs Harbour, Lake Macquarie, Sydney and Melbourne.

1st INCOMING Kerli and Ali Corlett

2nd OMEN Ben Noble

3rd TWISTER Dave Eichmeyer

In NZ another Elliott 7 has joined the race fleet in Wellington but the remaining E7s are predominantly in the Bay of Plenty, where the competition is hot. Congratulations to Maverick winner of the Boating NZ 100 Miler.

On a sad note Bruce Lawrence passed away suddenly, this year. Owner of ELLIOTT SEVEN Bruce will be very missed by class owners, who all enjoyed racing against him when they got the chance. The ELLIOTT SEVEN (NZ National Trailer Yacht Champ 1993) is for sale. For further details and inventory contact: Helen Lawrence 09 4255357.

ELLIOTT 770 CLASS

Growth in the E770 class is strong. In Auckland the E770s continue to out race any boats of similar size and find themselves in the under 9.5m division at most clubs. The 770 has proved to be a very popular production boat – very easy to handle, sails well on all points of sail and provides safe, race winning performance. In their debut year in Auckland the first 3 E770s achieved 40 guns out of 40 races and still managed to fit in some weekends away cruising.

On the Australian scene the E770 fleets continue to swell with several boats in most states and many prestigious titles under their belts already.

ELLIOTT 1050 CLASS

An Elliott 1050 can be seen in most major keelboat events, both racing and cruising, throughout NZ. The Class Association is strong and meets regularly to discuss relevant matters and get together with other owners. The majority of the class are based in Wellington and Auckland.

PL LEASE FUTURE SHOCK

ELLIOTT 55

LAUNCHED 1988

"Future Shock" became unbeatable during her sailing career in New Zealand. Winning numerous races and setting several new records. The record set in 1989 for the Auckland to Fiji race has yet to be broken. F.S. was an entrant in the inaugural Auckland to Fukuoka race in 1988, taking line honours in Fukuoka 24 hours ahead of the next yacht. Finding more competitive sailing in Australia, the yacht made several trips across the Tasman to race and was eventually sold there.

It is now ten years since the initial design work began on this Elliott 17 metre and yet "The Shock" continues to burn off much bigger race boats on the Australian circuit. The yacht has competed in all the major races in Australia, many of them several times, and in the Brisbane to Osaka race in 1994.

In 1995 owner, Peter Hansen – a dedicated winner, commissioned a new keel and rudder design from Greg Elliott . Once fitted, race performance increased dramatically and F.S. was back in the forefront, continuing to achieve racing honours against much newer and larger opposition. At Hamilton Island raceweek , they took three guns whilst racing against three maxi boats. Hansen sails with a nucleus of loyal crew and extras to make up numbers when required. Last summer alone, they set several new records in Australia. Racing maxis in the XXXXSydney to Gold Coast race they finished 2nd on line and set a new record for yachts under 18 metres.

The most dramatic of their wins is probably the Melbourne to Hobart, a challenging race due to the sheer nature of the area.. "PL Lease Future Shock" won the race, and broke the record despite being held up for several hours when crew member, Marty Jacobsen, broke his leg after being washed off the bow in the turbulent seas off the west coast of Tasmania

Look out for PL Lease Future Shock in the 1997 Sydney to Hobart. SHE’S HOT!!

HYDROFLOW

ELLIOTT 50

Launched 1995

Commissioned by Ron Brittain an Auckland businessman, the design brief for this Elliott 50 was for an all round performance yacht with light wind sailing emphasis. "Hydroflow" has scored an impressive list of results for a 49 footer. Regularly competing against, and often beating much larger yachts. This power packed machine has humbled many in local and overseas events.

Specifications:

LOA: 16.8m

BEAM: 4.8m

DRAFT: 3.5m

"Armini" was the first of a series of cruising yachts designed with a raised saloon and based on a proven race winning hull shape. This yacht also features a walk through interior layout. Michel believes this is the best 55 foot yacht in the world, and we believe he’s right ! "Armini" has already travelled some 7,000 miles, for short holidays, from home base in Noumea and Nicole and Michel have plans to do many more miles yet.

HOKKAIDO

Built by Custom Yachts

Launched: June ‘97

Specifications

LOA: 15m

BEAM: 4.5m

DRAFT: 1.9m

DISP: 13,000kg

James and Gris McGougan, a very experienced cruising couple, arrived in NZ for their second visit, having realised that their current boat was no longer meeting their requirements. They commissioned Greg Elliott, to provide them with a yacht that had good sailing speed and easy live aboard comfort. Through close consultation with Greg their dreams were fulfilled "Kotick" is a powerful yacht, under sail or motor; providing the necessary safety and speed for ocean passages. Spacious, luxurious comfort throughout, and all the practical requirements for easy live aboard luxury. "Kotick" was built and launched in time for the owners to dash up to Vanuatu for the tail end of the Pacific cruising season and return to NZ for our summer. After their successful sea trial James and Gris intend to head to other cruising areas of the world, we know they’ll be revelling in every moment.

COLLIOURE

ELLIOTT 14

Built by Custom Yachts

Launched:November 1997

Specifications:

LOA: 14m

BEAM: 4.5m

DRAFT: 2.6m

DISP: 10,000kg

Commissioned by two Auckland couples with a wealth of yachting experience, the design brief for this Elliott 14 was to provide a roomy interior without compromising the hull shape and therefore retaining the ability to get to the cruising grounds quickly. The result is a very special yacht, suitable for extended cruising and long ocean passages. The yacht has a luxurious, relaxed, walkthrough interior and voluminous cockpit. Under motor or sail "Collioure" will provide fast, safe travelling. Congratulations to the Macalisters and the Urry’s on their superb acquisition.

MORE DESIGNS

ELLIOTT 8.5 YACHT

The original design for this yacht was commissioned by Unitec Marine Technology . The yacht has been purpose designed with the intention of fulfilling a sailing school requirement. "UNITEC 11", the first boat completed to this design, was launched in June this year. Built by the students of the Marine Technology Department the yacht is now used as a sail training vessel for both racing and general sailing instruction. The comprehensive plans are suitable for both amateur and professional builders.

The easily driven hull is of moderate beam and a low drag form, and has a general purpose keel fin and a spade type rudder attached.

The topside height is slightly above the norm for this size and type of yacht, which will offer a drier ride and slightly more interior volume. The coach house has been kept as low as practical to allow full vision whilst sailing. One of the primary objectives of any sailing craft is to be able to be sailed easily, therefore, the yacht features a large cockpit capable of seating at least 6 adults. All control lines lead to the cockpit, thus enforcing the objective. The cockpit has generous storage.

The interior is basic but also allows for overnight excursions. It features a large enclosed head- wet locker and a galley. The settee- berthage is arranged to allow seating for a full crew.

The rig is fractional with topmast backstay. No running backstays are needed.

This is a contemporary style yacht and offers the safety, comfort and speed required by a sailing school.

ELLIOTT 31

This yacht is a speed machine. It was designed for speed and has no concessions for handicap rating rules. The comprehensive drawings are suitable for amateur or professional composite construction. The first two yachts built to these plans have achieved tremendous success racing in Australia.

PRIMO AMONGST EQUALS

A short story by James McGougan

Primo lay on "A" dock, her shallow flat hull hardly kissing the water; two raked back carbon fibre masts sprouted defiantly to the skies. Primo is not everyone’s boat. She is perhaps no-one’s boat – just the fastest fifty footer in the world. Greg Elliott is an engagingly abrasive designer, ignoring traditions or circumventing them – intent only on producing a vessel, which has the lowest friction, the highest stability – the smallest wetted surface – the greatest sail carrying power. Forget the ratings and the racing rules.

Primo (alias Elliott Marine) is the result. Her white hull is perhaps appropriately decorated with snake-like curving arrows which turn on themselves and entwine. She weights a mere seven tons and carries as much sail on her twin masts as many sixty footers. POWER!

One might expect such a fascinating monster to be flighty and intractable – to take a genius or a Goliath to steer, but nothing could be further from the truth. Two fingers on the wheel, held lightly, will curb her like a racehorse, as she strides out eagerly and silently into the waiting sea.

I came aboard as a guest when a visiting Japanese gentleman – now her new owner – was being given a sea trial. Having made my number with the Crew, I sat in the stern, watching as she was prepared for sea. The crew knew her well. Her co-owner Brian Petersen was supervising the attachment of the mainsail. Moose, the sales consultant from North Sails, was preparing the gennakers for their immediate hoist. The boat was a buzz of activity. Many of this crew had Whitbreads under their belts or had competed in the Transpac.

It was appropriate for cruising spectators like myself to become inconspicuous and remain low profile. The wind was ten knots or less. "What a shame", I thought, it would have been fun to have some wind to try her paces. We motored out of the marina with the mainsails set and eased the sheets slightly with the slight breeze on our beam, heading towards the harbour entrance.

The motor was cut and I had the impression that we had stopped, until I happened to notice the speedometer – six point five knots – seven – then eight. There was no noise – no stern wave, nothing.

Five minutes later we were a mile downwind and two gennakers were hoisted in ten seconds flat. One in the front and the second between the masts. Greg, hunched up like an old bear in the cockpit, narrowed his eyes and muttered "breeze coming from starboard – now she’ll go".

The breeze, when it came, proved to be twelve knots. We heeled gently and were doing fourteen knots through the water with the smooth wake of a planing powerboat and virtually no bow wave. The Japanese gentleman stood at the wheel holding it with one finger. A small inscrutable smile traced over his face. Hard to tell, but my guess is that he was happy at that moment. Other competent cruising boats of all sizes were reeled in as though stationary. We passed them either side, taking their wind or in their lee – it made no difference. Their skippers and crew grinned with resigned tolerance – "oh well – that doesn’t count – that’s Primo".

Not many moons ago she raced in the Transpac – an elite "invitation only" race organised by and for multi-millionaires to indulge their fantasies. Primo arrived for the start, having perhaps unwisely competed in a feeder race en route which forewarned the Transpac Race officials of her potential speed. The scrutineers took one look at her lines and said "Primo will have to race with the seventy footers" – and so she did. There were seven of them. Primo beat five of them. The seventy footers start a day after the fifty footers in the Transpac. In spite of this, Primo beat them all. There was some head scratching in the States. First the Americas Cup and now this! "Hell’s bells, what are these damned Kiwis trying to prove!?"

After the sailing trial, I spent a few minutes below the decks. Primo might be new, in spite of having sailed twenty-five thousand miles or more at racing speed; no stress cracks, no leaks, no sign of wear. Her dry bilges still have dust in them.

This November she raced in the Auckland Coastal Classic to Russell – a mere hundred and twenty miles away. Primo was the first monohull to arrive. She broke the old record in nine hours and a few minutes – an average speed of over thirteen knots.

Wait ‘til Greg Elliott starts on Multihulls!

CONGRATULATIONS to all of our owners who are out there racing.

FOR THE RECORD here are some of your results that we have heard about.
