Captain Tom Miller
First, Great Salt Lake shortly after takeoff 6/26
Next, my niece Shandra (brother Tim's daughter, 30 yr old, she is a SR. at Univ of Alaska, Fairbanks in Environ Chem) We are on a patio at a bar called the Marlin, in Fairbanks.
Then a pic of Billies Backpacker Hostel where I stayed a couple nites in Fairbanks - $28/nite
Next up, Shandra's home, a yurt, that she built herself about 15 miles North of Fairbanks.
Shandra's "facilities"..... to keep the pit in good shape, all number one had to be done in the woods, male and female. In the outhouse, no paper was allowed down the pit, she had a covered 5 gal. can for that. All bathing was done at the kitchen sink with a large can of water that she had carried in from town.
The view from my seat on the Arctic Circle Airways flight to Eagle:
Our approach to the gravel runway at Eagle. In the distant right you can see the town of Eagle. My brothers place would be a bit behind us to the right on the river - he's 6 miles from town. The "smears" in the picture are bugs that had smashed themselves on the windscreen.
"My Door" - I think I wrote about trying to get my old large self out of the plane. the pilots seat cushion was only 5 or 6 inches below the hatch. This was a King Air aircraft.
Last for this batch is the porous US/Canadian border, 6 miles upstream from Tims'. I won't admit to crossing the border, but I will say that sometime in my life I have been in the Yukon Territory. Great place for hoards of illegals to sneak into the US. Don't tell them.
One of the darker nights - at 1AM:
Brother Tim and his wife Kathleen at a wedding reception:
Indians dancing at the Potlatch, Episcopal Church in background:
Tim & Kathleen's house from Eagle Creek across the Yukon:
David Small and Kathleen walking down Mainstreet before the parade, the large building on the left is the "pump house" where people go to get their water.
The flag raising on the 4th of July. The building was the 1st Federal Courthouse in Alaska's interior 1902.
The majorettes leading the parade.
David and some others watching the parade:
The only store in town... groceries (some), hardware, ammo, and rooms to rent.
An old wolf hide on an abandon building downtown.
A pic of me shooting at the 15" square on the island in the Yukon River - distance 382 yards - I hit it 6 times in a row and won.
Many homes had "dog yards" where the sled dogs were kept. This one went on into the woods a ways.
Antlers on the roof top means "A hunter lives here" and is a mark of distinction.
Burl wood pillars are neat - this was at a preachers house and I'm sure he was thinking of the Burly Gates...
The local (and only) service station services all makes and models as evidenced by this photo:
The station itself.... notice the red airplane wingtip sticking out the right side of the overhang.
The Yukon Queen ship make a trip every day the 100 miles from Dawson City, Yukon Territory during the summer. This pic is from my brother's deck.
We saw a large cow moose walking across my brothers yard while we were playing dominoes. This pic is thru their picture window.
We went up to American Summit on day - nice place some was above the tree line. Notice we did not go unarmed. This is where my brother got his caribou 3 weeks ago and it is common for bears and moose to be in the area too.
One of the first things to grow after a fire is "fireweed." A beautiful sight - but it would have been nice if the area hadn't burned.
The caribou roast before Tim cooked it on the grill, lean, but yummy!
The moose head hanging over Tim and Kathleen's door
Tim and Kathleen's greenhouse full of tomato plants
A moonlit scene from Tim's - I had to set exposure on sky it was lighter than it appears
We came to some road construction on the way to Fairbanks. The trucks had been gone an hour and a half - so we only had to wait another 30 minutes. Doc took a nap!
The view on the road to Fairbanks.
Some of the mosquitos were huge and attacked me without mercy.
I had to put in a picture of "THE" pipeline...
Tim, Kathleen, Shandra, and I back at Billie's in Fairbanks before I had to go to the airport.
The Alaska Range off in the distance from the Fairbanks airport.
I zoomed in, best I could, on what I believe is Denali. This must be 100 or 200 miles away??
