I thought F&LinLV was a gas...

I want to settle something. I believe Rev. Stang referred to a "lid" in his

original post. My buddies and I are a bit young, and have often speculated as

to how much this quantity is. Upon a requisite re-screening of "Up in Smoke"

we guestimated that a lid is a half-ounce.

We we're going to contact Cecil Adams, but... well, we're too lazy.

Maybe someone here can settle this once and for all.

It depended on how much your dealer liked you how big a lid was. It

wasn't a weighed quantity, rather you stuffed some in a baggie and

rolled it up and then you'd measure how many "fingers" it was by

holding your hand out flat sideways next to the baggie to measure it.

If your dealer liked you it would be a four or five finger lid. Three

was about the norm, and two was either a rip off, or you weren't well

liked. It could be anywhere from a half ounce to an ounce just

depending on how fluffy or seedy or stemy it was. You'd grab some out

of the bag, put it down on a tray or record cover and break the leaves

and budlets off the stems, crush what was left to help the seeds come

loose, and sort of strain out the seeds using the cover of your

rolling papers.

Yep, I remember the days of the "dime bag."

We used indian incense to mask the smell, although I think Pat's mom was

more alarmed by the music than any smells coming from his bedroom. (we

were heavily into UMMAGUMMA, Meddle, and Tonto's Expanding Headband)

I remember a Lid as the amount that would flat-fill the lid of a standard

tobbacco tin, hence the name. This was a common means of measurement since

everybody rolled their own cigs, so there were always tins lying around,

whereas a set of scales was incriminating suggesting you were a dealer.

Most dealers carried it loose and measured out a lid, them shook the bag

and did a finger check. Three was minimum. Then you bitched about the

stems, pulled out the worst offenders, and added a bit of bud to close the

deal.

All this took place on the porch of a house painted blue and orange, or

purple and green, who's owner hadn't collected rent in over six months.

Some of the places had no heat, but most had electricity and running water.

An old refrigerator or stove were manadory lawn adornments, and the lawn

itself was a regulation two feet high. Sidewalks, lamposts and manhole

covers were painted with flowers and mystical symbols and every block had a

minimum of three VW camper buses, a schoolbus with the engine being

rebuilt, and one or two Harley Davidsons.

You couldn't travel by skateboard in those days 'cos boards had metal

wheels (hard to believe, but it's true). It wasn't that bad though, 'cos

everyone wore these pants with giant suction cup legs that would grab onto

the sidewalk and sort of pull you along.
