CORNWALL, Richard. Seeking info on Richard Cornwall, Master Ship Builder on the Great Lakes, served at Detroit with the British forces during the American Revolution. His name appeared in documents dealing with land acquisitions and sales on the St. Clair River from the local Indians, on land claims from the Crown as a military claimant and as possessing lands near Harrow and Colchester in the "new settlement." He was still applying for land as late as 1798 in Essex County.

He may be related to John Cornwall, UEL, who was in the area and held land close-by, but no conclusive proof has been found of this. Richard mentioned in a letter that his family was from New York State, but a reading from the available census for Essex County only reveals names of John's offspring (from Connecticut) and the name does not appear among John's relatives in the Thames Valley area. I doubt he could have returned to the States after the war, so what became of his family? Any leads appreciated. Mike Carr lamikecarr@hotmail.com
