Fluctuations in band personnel over the years caused Brach to gradually take on more & more instrumental roles within the group. Having always played fingerstyle guitar with a fondness for solo guitar type arrangements with moving bass lines (ala Joe Pass, George VanEps, Tuck Andress), Brach started experimenting with ways to modify his guitars so that he could play bass and guitar simultaneously. After much experimentation, he eventually modified a 7-string guitar to allow him to play bass on the bottom strings and guitar on the top strings at certain times while still being able to switch back to standard 7 string tuning when not playing bass parts. Following that he once again picked up his first instrument, the saxophone, for which he built a customized stand that allowed him to switch instantaneously between sax and guitar/bass (or to occasionally play all 3 simultaneously). In pursuit of diversity he also sometimes performed on 7-string bass, synth & occasionally on drums. This instrumental diversity led to an ever changing, varied feel within the band & is now evolving into a one-of-a-kind multi-instrumental solo project.
The name Urth itself was taken from Norse mythology in which the term represented the unity of past, present and future. Urth's transdimensional mix of funk, R&B, jazz and soul achieves that unity by combining elements from the great music of their roots with Urth's unique inventiveness & energy, defining their distinct, futuristic sound.
