W4GBU Amateur Radio

Guy Shields, W4GBU, SK

It is with deep sadness we have to say that our friend, colleague, and fellow radio aficionado, Guy Shields, W4GBU, became a "silent key", SK, passing away on May 28 2011. Guy was our web master and the original designer of this site. He will be sorely missed by his friends both inside the Amateur Radio hobby and all over the world and all walks of life who knew him.

The family provided us with this obituatuary:

Guy Julian Shields, 71, of Stone Mountain, GA, passed away peacefully at home on Sat, May 28th, 2011.

Born in Miami, FL on Sept. 19, 1939 to the late Samuel A. and Florence P. Shields, Guy leaves behind his best friend and wife of 5l years, Barbara Zee Shields, three children, daughter and son-in-law, Audrey and Jan Viljoen, son and daughter-in-law, Charlie and Toni Shields, son, Craig Shields, and brother, Lee Shields, as well as nine grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, a loving extended family and many friends. After graduation from Coral Gables High School in FL, Guy proudly served in the Marine Reserves, training as a field radio operator. His marriage to Barbara in 1959 also marked the beginning of Guy's 32-year career with IBM, where he was both an engineer and supervisor. His 55-year hobby of amateur (Ham) radio brought Guy (W4GBU) distinction the world over culminating in the DX Century Club's Honor Roll acknowledgement that Guy had officially contacted Hams in over 335 countries and territories. Guy and Barbara's love of travel brought them in contact with the Friendship Force, which led to a trip to Moscow in 1992, the first of many. Guy will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his love of the ocean, gardening and fishing, computers and gadgets, history and the Antiques Roadshow, politics and Freedom Concerts, action movies and Star Trek. He will truly be missed.

Fare thee well Guy Shields. 73 our ole friend, 73 and out.
