I decided to try to get the tractor running at least long enough to evaluate the running condition and determine what needed to be done during the restoration. I drained and replaced the oil in the crankcase and transmission. Clear water came out of both when I drained the oil. I would estimate that at least a quart of condensation was in each of the crankcase and the transmission case.
The engine was stuck. I jacked up one rear tire and couldn't turn the engine over. I sprayed about a half can of liquid wrench down each spark plug hole and left it for a while. It was still stuck. I put half a quart of Mystery Oil down each spark plug hole and left it for some time. By this time I had a battery in it. I tried to turn it over with the starter and the on the second try it turned over. I cranked it enough to blow the oil out. The points in the magneto looked new and the gap was correct. With gas in the tank it wouldn't fire.
I had the carburetor overhauled and put it back on. The tractor started with the with the starter. I ran it long enough to determine that it wouldn't overheat. Over several months I ran it sever times, put an after market 3-point hitch on it, and used it to run a brush hog. Known problems that were identified are a clutch that sometimes doesn't disengage, seems to run too lean maybe because rust in the tank as gotten into the carburetor, manifold rusted through on the exhaust side, only 85 pounds per square inch on the number one cylinder dry and showing 110 pound after cranking with a little oil in the cylinder.
