Angelica Graynamore, daughter of Samuel Harvey Graynamore and half-sister of Patricia Graynamore, is one of the most colorful characters in the movie. Angelica meets Joe at the airport and entertains him while he is in Los Angeles waiting for Patricia to take him to the island of Waponi Woo. The Los Angeles episode forms a bridge from Joe's mundane past to his heroic future.
Angelica is an artistic type. In addition to being a painter, she is also a poet. Here is the couplet she recites to Joe:
[Sound] Long ago, the delicate tangles of his hair
Covered the emptiness of my hands.
After reciting the poem, she asks Joe, 'Do you wanna hear it again?' It is a sad poem that expresses Angelica's inner loneliness and longing for love. She seems to be trying to reach out to Joe, but neither she nor he is really prepared for any serious emotional involvement.
A correspondent of mine has informed me that Meg Ryan is of the opinion that Dede, Angelica, and Patricia are essentially the same woman at different stages of emotional development and that Angelica is the adolescent. This may partially explain why Joe is attracted to these three women in particular.
In most ways, Angelica is the opposite of Dede. Angelica is very complex and introspective--perhaps too much so for her own good.
(Angelica happens to be my wife's favorite Meg Ryan character. Thanks to Rachel Platt for suggesting that Angelica's poem be included here.)
