Teams will play a "round-robin" schedule of three games, one against each opponent in their bracket and one "cross-over" game against a team from the other bracket. The two bracket winners advance to the championship match on Monday. Bracket standings are based on the tournament point system:
- 3 points for a win
- 1 point for a tie
- 0 points for a loss
- 1 bonus point for a shutout
- 1 bonus point for each goal scored (maximum 3 bonus points per game)
Christina Ottis and Rachel Cordell joined the Quest as guest players for the tournament. They currently play for the U-14 Cobb YMCA Spartans. We thank Christina (a.k.a. "C.O.") and Rachel (a.k.a. "R.C.") for helping out!
We drew a very tough schedule of three Athena "A" level teams. We didn't come away with any wins, but the Quest played with enthusiasm and spirit throughout the tournament. Here's our schedule. You can click on a result to see a game report.

Game 1: Lost 5-0 vs. United Quest Red U-13
The Quest Red were "playing up" in the U-14 age group for the tournament. They are the Quest's #1 U-13 team and finished in 2nd place in the U-13 Athena "A" division during the spring. The Quest Blue faced them once before and shocked everyone with an inspired 1-0 upset win in the 1999 Canterbury Cup.

Game 2: Lost 5-0 vs. Tophat 04 Gold
Tophat 04 Gold is Tophat's top U-14 team. They finished in 3rd place in the Athena "A" division, losing only one game. They are a strong team with size and speed and lots of skill.
They showed their quality immediately and took control from the opening kickoff. Tophat knocked the ball around seemingly at will, playing mostly 1-touch soccer. While Tophat had most of the control, the Quest created a few attacks, and looked very dangerous every time they did so. Rachael was a constant threat to the Tophat defense.
Tophat took the lead with a perfectly placed long shot into the upper corner on the far post side. There's not much you can do about goals like that other than say "good shot." Tophat scored two more goals in the first half, one on a header off a driven cross, to take a 3-0 lead.
The bottom line is that Tophat's #1 U-14 team is lots stronger than the Quest Blue, which is United's #3 U-14 team. Tophat knew it, the Quest knew it, and all the spectators knew it or figured it out pretty quickly. To the Quest's credit, the team played with total commitment the entire game, even when the score was out of hand. Even more impressive was the Quest's enthusiasm. The Quest was determined to score a goal. It didn't happen, but it wasn't for a lack of effort.
The final score was 5-0 in favor of Tophat.
Game 3: Lost 3-0 vs. United Quest White
The Quest White took control early with a good possession game. The Quest Blue wasn't getting much possession, but the Quest Blue defense managed to keep the Quest White off the scoreboard. Part of the defensive duty meant blocking shots, which resulted in some corner kicks.
The Quest White have some strong and accurate legs. Their corner kicks were consistently driven balls to the top of the goal area. Megan Matthews got her head on the end of one of them to score and give the Quest White a 1-0 lead. The Quest White took a 2-0 halftime lead after combination play between their forwards led to a close range shot.
The Quest Blue kept at their task in the second half and held the Quest White attack in check. Then the field and former Quest Blue player Sarah Breevoort combined to give the Quest White a 3-0 lead. The field lended a hand via one of its puddles. The puddle intercepted a wide-open Quest Blue pass and left two defensive players stranded. The play led to Sarah getting the ball at the top of the penalty area. Her shot was an excellent line drive into the top of the Quest Blue goal. Quest Blue keeper Jessica didn't have a chance.
Once again, when faced with adversity, the Quest Blue never quit. The team was determined to score. Time was running out, though. When the ball went out of bounds, Quest Blue players tried to stretch the clock by hustling after the ball, even if it belonged to the Quest White. This is a seemingly little thing, but it shows an admirable "never say quit" attitude.
