Game 7 vs. IAYMCA Eagles:
The Eagles are the top U-14 Athena team from the Isakson / Alpharetta YMCA. The Quest and Eagles have met three times in the past. The Eagles won the first two games easily (U-12 fall season and a pre-season U-14 tournament). In the most recent meeting (fall '99 game 4), the Quest made a thrilling late game rally from a 4-2 deficit, scoring two goals in the last 5 minutes to tie the game 4-4.
The Eagles started well and put early pressure on the Quest defense. In the 5th minute, the Quest suffered some misfortune when Charlsey strained her already ailing hamstring and had to come out of the game. She was done for the day, which meant the Quest would only have one substitute on a hot day.
The Eagles have several skilled dribblers, along with plenty of team size, speed and strength. They used these characteristics to take a 3-0 halftime lead:
- In the 6th minute, an Eagle player made a cut-back move into the center about 30 yards out from goal. She shot high and hard. Big J was ready and made a good leaping effort, but the shot was too well-placed and found the net just under the crossbar.
- In the 15th minute, Big J made an excellent reflex save on a close-range shot. The ball rebounded back into the penalty area, and another Eagle player was there to knock it in from close range.
- In the 25th minute, a speedy Eagle player ran onto a through ball to create a breakaway. Two Quest defenders gave it their all in recovery, but the Eagle player had too much speed and she was able to outrun the pursuit and score.
The Quest created some pretty good scoring chances in the second half. Amanda and Kaelen came closest. Amanda made a nice dribbling run up the left side, then cut toward goal and narrowly missed with a high shot toward the near corner. Kaelen ran onto a free kick by Alex in the Eagles penalty area, but her shot hit the goalpost.
The Eagles scored one more goal midway through the half on another high, hard shot from outside. Big J leaped and got her hands on the ball, but it carried past her fingertips and trickled into the Quest goal.
The final score was a 4-0 Eagles win. The Quest played a solid game, but this was one of those contests where the other team (the Eagles) was clearly a stronger team. (They are currently in 2nd place in the division and look likely to move up to the Athena "A" division in the fall.)
Goalies: Big J (full game).
With today's loss, the Quest's spring regular season record is now 2 wins, 1 tie and 4 losses. The Quest earns 0 points for the loss and now has 12 points after seven games.
