United Quest Blue '85 Athena (U-14) - Spring 2000 -

Spring 2000:

• Regular season schedule: Our team plays in the Georgia Youth Soccer Association U-14 (under 14 in age as of July 31, 1999) Athena "B" division. We played a 9-game spring season schedule against other U-14 Athena teams throughout Georgia.

The Quest finishing in 8th place out of 10 teams with a record of 2 wins, 5 losses and 2 ties. Our schedule is listed below. You can click on each game result to see a detailed game report. • Vulcan Cup: We played in the Vulcan Cup tournament in Birmingham, Alabama over the weekend of March 11-12. On day 1, we tied 2-2 against the Alabama Angels (Mt. Brook, AL) and lost 3-0 to the Germantown (TN) Fury in rain-shortened games. We had good weather on day 2 and posted a dominating 4-0 win over the Attack White (Birmingham, AL) in a full-length game. • Welcome Dawn! The Quest welcome Dawn Bristol, who will help coach the Quest during the spring. Dawn is part of "the coaching Bristol family," which includes dad Rob (coach of the U-15 Quest Blue) and sister Ann (coach of the U-11 Quest White). Dawn coached the U-16 Quest Red during the fall. She played college soccer (and locally in high school at Wheeler), and she continues to play in the Atlanta women's league (on the same team as Kerri Schmitt, coach of the U-11 Quest Red and White teams). We're delighted to have Dawn helping the team!

• Concorde Challenge Cup: The Quest began their spring season by playing in the Concorde Challenge Cup. The Quest got off to a good start on day 1 with a 2-0 win over the UGSA (Greenville, SC) Twisters. The Quest then ran into a buzz saw in the afternoon, falling 6-0 to the excellent U-13 PTCYSA (Peachtree City) Lazers White. On day 2, the Quest lost 2-1 to the WGSC (West Gwinnett) Herricanes Red. • Wednesday fast footwork clinics: Fast footwork is back for the spring! These sessions run each Wednesday night in March starting March 1st. Sessions are on Canterbury 3 from 5:45 - 6:30 PM. These are intensive "one player per ball" footwork sessions that are designed to increase each player's skill and confidence on the ball. The per-player cost is $0.00 (yes, free!). Coach Ward highly recommends this program for all players.

• Goalkeeper clinics: Hugh Brown (United's goalkeeper trainer) is once again offering his excellent Goalkeeper Dynamics clinics. Sessions are offered three times each week:

• Mondays: 7:00 - 8:30 PM at Noonday 4
• Wednesdays: 7:00 - 8:30 PM at Noonday 4
• Fridays: 5:30 - 6:30 PM at Noonday 4

This is a great opportunity to get specialized goalkeeper training from a top-flight trainer. Again, the per-player cost is $0.00 (yes, free!). Bring a ball and goalie gloves. You'll be on the ground a lot, so you'll probably want to wear long pants and a long-sleeve shirt. Please call the goalkeeper hotline at (404) 443-2400, box 105709 before each session for any last-minute status updates.
