1999 Atlanta Cup Tournament

The Quest played in the Atlanta Cup tournament over the Labor Day weekend. We were in the U-14 Athena "B" division. The division had twelve teams divided into three groups. We were in group A with the DC Starline Flyers, GSA Phoenix White and Macon Centric United Gold. GSA is an Athena "A" team during the regular season, while DC and Macon are Athena "B" teams.

The format for each group was "round robin" (each teams plays the other three teams). The three group winners and best 2nd place team would advance to the semi-final round. Group standings were based on the tournament point system: 6 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, 1 point for each goal scored (up to 3 per game), and 1 point for a shutout.

We played a solid game in our first match but fell 4-0 to a strong "A"-level GSA Phoenix White team. We played Macon Centric United ("B"-level) in the afternoon, losing 4-0 again after a listless performance. We got our game in gear for the third match, playing wonderfully but falling 1-0 on a very late goal to the DC Starline Flyers. While we didn't come up with any wins, we got a lot of much-needed experience against tough teams. We hope this will pay off as we enter the tougher Athena "B" division in the fall regular season.

We thank the Georgia State Soccer Association for hosting the well-run tournament.

Game 1: Lost 4-0 vs. GSA Phoenix White

The GSA Phoenix White play in the Athena "A" division. The Quest has played a "GSA Phoenix White" several times during its history, but this Phoenix White is a totally different team. The old GSA Phoenix White is now the GSA Phoenix Black (playing in Athena "C"). The new GSA Phoenix White was formed over the summer through the merger of two other "A" level teams from Gwinnett county.

The Quest had an excellent start, playing GSA on even terms for the first ten minutes of the game. GSA scored soon afterwards on a corner kick. The Quest cleared the initial kick, but not far enough out of danger. A Phoenix player won a second short clearance and shot high over the Quest keeper into the goal. GSA tacked on a second goal a few minutes later on an alert goal-mouth follow-up after a save and rebound.  GSA took a 3-0 lead moments before halftime. GSA was clearly the stronger team, and they scored one more in the second half to seal the 4-0 win.

Game 2: Lost 4-0 vs. Macon Centric United

Macon plays in the Athena "B" division. The Quest and Macon have played twice before. Macon was clearly the stronger team each time, winning 2-0 during our U-12 days, and 3-0 during our U-13 days.

The first half of this one wasn't pretty. The Quest just didn't have a "spark" in this game. Macon scored three goals in rapid succession to take a 3-0 lead, then finished with a breakaway goal in the second half to earn a 4-0 win.

Game 3: Lost 1-0 vs. DC (Douglas County) Starline Flyers

This is the Quest's first game against the Starline Flyers. The Flyers are an Athena "B" team from Douglas County. The Quest shook off yesterday afternoon's poor performance and played a wonderful game. The Quest dominated large portions of the game and generated several scoring chances. But all shots were denied by either the goalie, a defender or the goalie's best friend, the goal posts. The Flyers scored a late, late goal to claim a 1-0 win. The Quest and Flyers will meet again next Saturday in the first game of the fall regular season.

Summary

The four semi-finalists were GSA Phoenix White, Macon Centric United, WGSC Herricanes and our sister team, the United Quest White. United beat GSA 1-0, and Macon beat WGSC 3-0 to advance to the finals, where United beat Macon 4-1 to win the championship. Congratulations Quest White!
