Bird Thomas Lanier 1703

Bird Thomas Lanier married Mary (Madderson or Madison). They were in Brunswick County, Virginia before 1723; his first deed was 1739, but he may have had a patent earlier. On January 2, 1747, he received a land warrant of 312 acres on the south side of Great Creek, and on January 12, 1747, he received another tract of 374 acres on Allen's Creek. On September 8, 1747, Bird Thomas was still living in Brunswick County, though part of it had become Lunnenburg. In 1748 he was neither in the Poll list of Brunswick or the Tithables of Lunnenburg, but in the latter he was represented by an agent, Zachariah Baker. From the Executive Journals of the Council of Colonial Virginia, Vol 5, p 321, Council 14 June 1750: "Richard Blalock having entered a Caveat against Bird Thomas Lanier and his wife for 400 acres lying on the east side of Butcher's Creek in Brunswick or Lunenburg, the Sheriff having returned that the Defendant lives in North Carolina, Ordered that the Plaintiff have a patent for the said Land". Sold 283 acres in Brunswick Co., Virginia, on April 4, 1745 to Richard Russell for 45 pounds. This was a part of a larger tract granted to John Spell by Letters of Patern bearing the date of December 28, 1736. "Acknowledged in Court 4 April 1745 by Bird Thomas Lanier and Mary Lanier, wife of said Bird Thomas Lanier, appeared and voluntarily relinquished her right of dower." (Deed Book 3, page 6)

       +Susanna(?) Green

Benjamin (1732-1817) may have gone to Georgia in 1756 with a group of early settlers, as it was thought by the family that Benjamin Green, one of the group, was the father of Susanna who later married Benjamin Lanier; the names of the children were so similar. He may have married Susanna in Georgia, and returned to Duplin County (N. C.) in 1759 as his first deed there is dated January 7, 1762. In July, 1762 Benjamin and Susanna Lanier of Duplin County, sell his land in Granville County which he had purchased in 1748. They did not move permantly to Georgia until June of 1770. (Colonial Records of Georgia, Vol.XI,1770, p 194)

The Historical Society of Georgia has placed a marker near Rockyford, Screven County to commemorate the first county seat; it names Benjamin and Lemeul Lanier with other early settlers; And when the county was established there December 14, 1895, the home of Benjamin Lanier, across Mile Branch from the marker, was the first Court House. He was Justice of St. Matthews Parish before Screven County was formed; during the Revolution he held a very responsible position, being appointed to purchase provisions for the Army, and store them in a safe place, and to be responsible for 5,000 Pounds. He was also a Justice in Effingham County, a Member of the House, and assisted in forming the Constitution of Georgia. He was a patriot whose descendants are eligible for membership in the D. A. R. His will is in old Book B, 1806-1877, or new Book 1, p. 21
