          Lovin M. Lanier served in the 25th Infantry Regiment. It was organized at Savannah,
        Georgia, in September, 1861. The men were raised in the counties of Bryan, Screven,
        Liberty, Telfair, Henry, and Calhoun. Assigned to the Department of South Carolina,
        Georgia, and Florida, the unit served on the coast until the summer of 1863 when it
        was ordered to Mississippi. After serving at Jackson, it was attached to Wilson's,
        C. H. Stevens', H. R. Jackson's and, in 1865,Henderson's Brigade. The regiment
        was consolidated for a time with the 1st Georgia Batallion Sharpshooters and in
        December, 1863, the 25th/1st Batallion totalled 341 men and 151 arms. It fought
        with the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Atlanta, moved with Hood into
        Tennessee, and saw action at Bentonville. The unit was greatly reduced when it
        surrendered on April 26, 1865. The name Lovin M. Lanier is listed in the Muster
        Roll of the 1st Company, 25th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Company, Army
        of Tennessee, C. S. A., Chatham County, Georgia, "Bryan Guards". According
        to these records, his ranks are as follows: 4th Sergeant - August 9,1861;
        Elected 2nd Lieutenant May 11, 1862; 1st Lieutenant. He was captured at
        Salisbury, North Carolina on April 12,1865. He was released at Camp Chase,
        Ohio, on June 14, 1865.
 

        Lovin served in the state legislature of Georgia from 1902 to 1904 and was a director
        of the Pembroke State Bank from 1897 until his death in 1915.

            successful merchant and later a farmer in Bryan County, GA.  F. J. Lanier was also
            treasurer of Bryan County for 16 years.
