Nicholas Lanier

                        1690 - Before 1779

Nicholas was born about 1690 in Charles City County, Virginia, the son of John Lanier and Sarah Edmunds, John's second wife. Sarah was the widow of William Edmunds. Nicholas married Mary, possibly Shepherd, about 1713 or 1714. By a deed dated April 2, 1728, and recorded in Prince George County, Nicholas Lanier describes himself as the son of John Lanier, and now of Brunswick County. He and Mary convey land patented formerly by his father; at the same time they sell another patent granted to John Lanier and Peter Wyche in 1663, to Holmes Boisseau of Prince George County. Patent Book 11, p 365. Although he was in Brunswick as early as 1728, the first deed recorded to him was dated April 5, 1739. He was one of the first Justices in 1736, Captain of a Company  of Militia, Sheriff, Church Warden of St. Andrews Parish, and held many other important offices. Nicholas lived to a "very advanced age", his will was offered for probate August 23, 1779, but was contested by Nicholas Shepherd Lanier, "his heir at law"; it was never admitted to record and was later found among Court papers. Upon the death of Nicholas Shepherd Lanier in 1781, the Court ordered that William Lanier, who had been named Executor by his father be summoned to go on with the proof of the said will. This continued for several years, with many depositions and is recorded in Order Book 2, p 169, Brunswick County, Virginia.
